Apple Could Join Forces with Meta for AI Features on iPhones, Following its Partnership with OpenAI
Apple is making strides in the AI sector and seeking assistance from partners. Earlier this month, Apple announced its collaboration with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into Siri's revamped version.
Now, the Wall Street Journal reveals that Apple is also in discussions with Meta, Facebook's parent company, for a partnership. These negotiations with Meta are still ongoing and may not materialize.

Apple's Potential Deal with Meta
Meta has declined to comment on the matter, and Apple has not provided an immediate response. Sarah Perez observed that Apple's current AI strategy appears practical rather than revolutionary. By incorporating AI features like writing suggestions and custom emojis into existing products, Apple aims for practical adoption over flashy innovation.
A deal with Meta could diversify Apple's partnerships, reducing reliance on a single entity while validating Meta's generative AI technology. According to the Journal, Apple isn't offering financial compensation for these collaborations. Instead, it provides distribution opportunities for AI partners who can then market premium subscriptions.
Elon Musk, co-founder of OpenAI and now competing through his startup xAI, expressed concerns about ChatGPT's deep integration with Apple's systems. He even threatened to ban Apple devices from his companies. However, Apple assured that it would seek user permission before sharing any data with ChatGPT. Any potential integration with Meta would likely follow a similar protocol.
Regulatory Challenges in Europe
Apple has announced that its new AI technology, Apple Intelligence, will be included in upcoming versions of its operating systems such as iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia later this year. However, due to the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA), which aims to foster competition in digital markets, Apple plans to withhold this technology from the EU.
Additionally, features like iPhone Mirroring and SharePlay Screen Sharing will also be held back. "We are concerned that the interoperability requirements of the DMA could force us to compromise the integrity of our products in ways that risk user privacy and data security," Apple stated. By focusing on practical applications and strategic partnerships, Apple is positioning itself to leverage AI effectively while navigating regulatory landscapes carefully.
