Report: Meta Set to Launch AI-Powered Chatbots with Diverse Personas
According to a report from the Financial Times (FT), Meta, led by Mark Zuckerberg, is making significant strides in the development of AI-powered chatbots that can replicate different personalities and engage in human-like conversations with users. These chatbots, referred to as "personas" by Meta's staff, are set to be launched as early as next month.
The Birth of Meta's Chatbot Personas
FT's report sheds light on Meta's endeavor to create chatbot "personas" that embody unique characters. For instance, one of these chatbots will emulate the persona of Abraham Lincoln, while another will take on the laid-back demeanor of a surfer, offering travel advice. The main objective behind these AI-powered chatbots is to provide a novel search function and personalized recommendations to users, aiming to enhance user engagement and enjoyment.

Unleashing the Power of Data
From a business perspective, AI-powered chatbots hold the potential to gather substantial amounts of user data, including their interests and preferences. For Meta, this data could be invaluable for improving targeted content and advertisements. As reported by FT, the majority of Meta's annual revenue, an astounding $117 billion, is generated from advertisements. The integration of these chatbots is expected to strengthen Meta's outreach to target users more effectively.
Mark Zuckerberg's Vision for AI
During the recent second-quarter earnings call, Mark Zuckerberg hinted at Meta's extensive work on various new AI-powered products. He emphasized that AI could serve as personal assistants and coaches, and facilitate interactions with businesses and creators across mobile apps and the metaverse. The objective is to enhance the overall user experience and create seamless interactions within Meta's ecosystem.
A Glance at the Competition
Meta is not the only major company exploring the integration of AI-powered chatbots for their users. Snapchat, for instance, has already introduced an AI chatbot named "My AI," powered by OpenAI's GPT technology. This chatbot enables users to interact with AI and even offers paid users the option to receive generative Snaps from the chatbot. However, the implementation of this chatbot received mixed reactions from users, with concerns arising about inappropriate content when conversing with younger users.
Meta's Connect Developer Event
Meta is expected to provide further insights into its AI initiatives during the upcoming Connect developer event in September. The event promises to shed more light on Meta's AI roadmap and how these chatbot "personas" will integrate into the company's vision for the future.
