Sony's PlayStation 5 Smashes Sales Records

Sony's popular gaming console, the PlayStation 5, which made its debut in 2020, has managed to set a new sales record of 19.1 million units during the financial year, surpassing the company's initial forecast of 18 million units. This impressive performance marks a significant increase from the previous fiscal year, when the company faced significant supply chain disruptions, resulting in sales of 11.5 million PS5 units.

Sony's gaming division has proven to be a major contributor to the company's overall profits for the year, with an operating profit of 250 billion yen. However, despite the gaming division's success, the company's operating profit has witnessed a decline of 27% YoY.

Sony Expects to Sell 25 Million PS5 Consoles This Year

Sony expects its gaming division to earn 270 billion yen in operating profit for the current fiscal year and has set a sales target of 25 million PS5 consoles for the same period.

Sony's Other Divisions Are Doing Good Too

Sony is also experiencing immense success in their image sensor chips business, which provides optics for most of the world's smartphones, with profits of 212.2 billion yen in the year ending March 31st, marking an impressive 36% YoY increase.

Despite the significant growth, the company has forecasted a 5.7% decline in the division's operating profit for the current fiscal year, citing a decrease in demand for its image sensors, particularly from Chinese smartphone manufacturers.

In contrast, the company's music business has observed a remarkable 24.7% YoY profit growth, totaling 263.1 billion yen in the year ended March 31st, thereby becoming Sony's largest business in terms of profit.
