Intel, MediaTek Join Forces To Develop 5G-Supported Modems For Laptops, PCs

|

5G network connectivity is not going to be exclusive to smartphones in the coming days. Chipmakers like Intel and MediaTek seems to have started working on models that will allow laptops and PCs to make use of 5G connectivity. Back in April, Intel scrapped its plan on manufacturing 5G-modems. However, the company has now announced that it has started working on the same. Following are the details:

Intel, MediaTek Join Forces To Develop 5G-Supported Modems For PCs

Intel has teamed up with MediaTek to bring 5G supported modems for the laptops and PCs. Apparently, Intel will be taking care of the 5G specification settings, while MediaTek will be developing a modem. Once MediaTek successfully designs the model, Intel will not only validate but optimize it as well.

Besides, Intel has plans to convince various OEMs to use the newly developed hardware. The primary aim is to be sure if the final product is free of any issues. Also, Intel is said to write operating-system-level drivers for the modem.

Intel hasn't been successful in developing a 10mm hardware that could support 5G connectivity. So, roping in MediaTek to develop the hardware sounds like a fair deal. This collaboration could be fruitful for both brands.

Also, MediaTek is likely to be benefited from this deal; considering it will be able to utilize Intel's expertise in software development. It is also likely to benefit the company to get along well with the OEM vendors in the laptops and PC segment.

It is expected that the manufactures will make use of Helio M70 5G modem for PC which is already available in the market. As the modem is already based on MediaTek's ARM SoC (System-On-Chip), it is backed by Intel's technology is going to up the game.

As for the MediaTek Helio M70, it is a 5G FR1 modem only. The specialty of this modem is to share RF characteristics at sub 6Hz levels. It uses the already available 4G technology with 5G FR2 that functions within the millimeter-wave spectrum.
