Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro Camera Upgrades: What's New Behind the Lens?

In a tech world where innovation is relentless, Google's Pixel series continues to set the bar high. The recent unveiling of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro promises to take mobile photography and video to new heights.

With an emphasis on camera advancements and AI-powered editing tools, these devices offer a compelling blend of hardware and software prowess.

Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro Camera Upgrades: What's New Behind the Lens?

Enhanced Camera Hardware

One of the standout features of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro is their camera hardware. Both models boast a flagship 50-megapixel main camera with an impressive 21% increase in light sensitivity compared to their predecessors, the Pixel 7 series. This enhancement ensures that users can capture stunning low-light photos and videos like never before. Moreover, the autofocus capabilities have been significantly improved, delivering swift and precise focusing in challenging lighting conditions.

For the Pixel 8, the ultrawide camera has received a significant upgrade, now featuring autofocus. This addition extends Macro Focus functionality to the standard Pixel series for the first time, enabling users to capture stunning close-up shots with ease.

The Pixel 8 Pro takes it a step further by upgrading every camera, including the selfie camera, with autofocus. The 48-megapixel ultrawide lens collects 105% more light and focuses 30% closer, resulting in improved Macro Focus shots with beautiful aesthetic blur. Additionally, the 48-megapixel telephoto lens provides cleaner zoomed-in shots in low-light settings, even at 10x zoom, while maintaining optical quality.

Dual Exposure Technology

Another impressive feature introduced with the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro is Dual Exposure technology, available on the main camera. This technology enhances the sharpness and reduces graininess in videos, particularly in challenging lighting scenarios, such as a sunset backdrop. Dual Exposure captures two simultaneous images-one optimized for low-light and the other for high dynamic range. The result is natural-looking videos with vibrant colors and minimal noise.
Real Tone and Video Boost

Google has been diligently working to improve image equity with Real Tone, ensuring that it accurately represents a wide range of human skin tones, particularly darker ones, in photos and videos. This year, Real Tone's advancements extend to video, delivering the Pixel's best-ever skin tone accuracy in video content. Furthermore, the addition of Night Sight technology enhances flash photography, ensuring that darker skin tones appear natural, even in flash photos.

Pixel 8 Pro introduces Video Boost, an exciting feature that leverages HDR+ algorithms to enable computational video. Processing a one-minute 4K video at 30 frames per second is equivalent to handling 1,800 photos, a task no mobile phone can manage independently. However, the Pixel 8 Pro combines the efficiency of the Tensor G3 chip with the computational power of Google's data centers to make HDR+ video a reality.

With Video Boost, high-quality videos are immediately available on your device, while the video simultaneously uploads to the cloud for computational photography enhancements. This technology also brings Night Sight Video to the Pixel series, allowing users to create memorable low-light videos.

Pro Controls for Creative Freedom

The Pixel 8 Pro elevates creative freedom with Pro Controls, offering manual adjustments for focus, shutter speed, and ISO. In addition to existing controls like white balance and exposure, users can now fine-tune their photography to achieve the desired results. Remarkably, all of Pixel's renowned HDR+ computational photography features remain active while using Pro Controls.

Guided Frame for Accessibility

Google is committed to accessibility, and the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro introduce Guided Frame, a feature designed to assist individuals who are blind or have low vision in taking photos. Guided Frame uses audio cues, high-contrast animations, and haptic feedback to help users capture photos, not limited to faces, but also including pets and objects.

AI-Powered Editing Features

In addition to camera improvements, Google Photos on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro welcomes four AI-powered editing features:

Best Take: This feature simplifies group photos, automatically creating blended images from a series of similar photos taken closely together, ensuring everyone looks their best.

Magic Editor: Leveraging generative AI, Magic Editor allows users to make complex photo edits effortlessly. From resizing subjects to enhancing lighting and backgrounds, this tool offers a wide array of creative possibilities.

Audio Magic Eraser: This advanced tool identifies and isolates distracting background noises in videos, enabling users to control and reduce unwanted sounds, such as talking or wind.

Zoom Enhance: Available on the Pixel 8 Pro, Zoom Enhance allows users to zoom in on photos after capturing them. Using generative AI, it intelligently predicts fine details and fills in gaps between pixels, providing greater framing flexibility.
