Samsung Galaxy S24 VS Google Pixel 8: Clash of the “AI Phones”

The Samsung Galaxy S24 is a powerful smartphone, and now with the Galaxy AI at its helm, how does it compare to the other "smart" smartphone, the Google Pixel 8?

Let's find out.

Samsung Galaxy S24 VS Google Pixel 8: Clash of the “AI Phones”

Design and Build

Retaining its signature design language, the S24 features a flat glass back, a robust metal frame, and the durability of Armored Aluminum. The 6.2-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display boasts a 1Hz-120Hz dynamic refresh rate and a peak brightness of 2,600 nits.

With a sleek aluminum frame and Gorilla Glass Victus, the Pixel 8 exudes a premium feel. Its 6.2-inch Actua OLED display offers a fixed 60Hz-120Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 2,000 nits.

In terms of design, both devices present a flagship aesthetic.

Display

Samsung's expertise in display technology shines through with the Galaxy S24. Its 6.2-inch Dynamic AMOLED panel, featuring a 1080p resolution and a 1Hz-120Hz refresh rate, boasts vibrant colors and a remarkable peak brightness of 2,600 nits.

Google addressed past display issues with the Pixel 8's 6.2-inch Actua OLED panel, which also refreshes at 120Hz and has a 1080p resolution. Although it is slightly less bright than the S24, the Pixel 8 offers improved color saturation and a commendable display upgrade.

Performance

Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 (or Exynos 2400 in select markets) and equipped with 8GB of RAM, the S24 promises robust performance for gaming and multitasking.

Running on the Google Tensor G3 chip with 8GB of LPDDR5X RAM, the Pixel 8 focuses on optimized performance and energy efficiency, offering a smooth user experience.

Both devices bring impressive performance, catering to different user preferences - raw power with the S24 or optimized efficiency with the Pixel 8.

Cameras

Boasting a versatile triple camera setup - 50MP main, 12MP ultra-wide, and 10MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom - the S24 integrates AI enhancements for an elevated photography experience.

Equipped with dual rear cameras featuring a 50MP main shooter and a 12MP ultra-wide lens, the Pixel 8 excels in computational photography, ensuring consistent color, dynamic range, and contrast.

While both offer commendable camera systems, the S24's additional telephoto lens provides extra versatility.

Software

The S24 runs Android 14 with Samsung's One UI 6.1 and includes AI-powered features under its 'Galaxy AI' umbrella. It also promises seven years of software support. Notable improvements include an updated notification shade and enhancements in the camera app. Samsung has done an excellent job this year by promising to support the entire Galaxy S24 range with 7 years of Android updates, matching Google in this regard.

The Pixel 8 offers a relatively stock Android 14 experience with Google's Material You skin. It also boasts seven years of software support, with a focus on security patches and major Android updates. The choice between the two phones comes down to whether you prefer the UI tweaks of One UI or the smooth Material You experience.

Battery

The S24 features a 4,000mAh battery, supporting 25W wired, 15W wireless, and 4.5W reverse wireless charging.

With a larger 4,575mAh battery, the Pixel 8 supports 27W wired and up to 18W wireless charging.

Despite similar battery capacities, the Pixel 8's efficiency gives it an edge in delivering a longer-lasting user experience.

The Verdict

In this clash of titans, the Samsung Galaxy S24 and Google Pixel 8 present compelling choices. The S24 shines with its dynamic AMOLED display, powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, and versatile camera system. On the other hand, the Pixel 8 stands out with its refined design, efficient Tensor G3 chip, clean software experience, and impressive battery life.

Ultimately, the decision between these Android giants hinges on personal priorities - whether prioritizing raw performance, camera prowess, or a clean Android experience.
