Apple Addresses Overheating Issues in iPhone 15 Pro Series with Upcoming Software Update

Apple's recent iPhone 15 Pro series, which includes USB-C, a titanium frame, and thinner bezels, made headlines for its new set of features. However, within a week of its release, iPhone 15 Pro users began complaining about severe overheating issues. Speculations about the cause of thermal throttling were rife, with some blaming the new titanium frame and others pointing to the absence of an active cooling system. Fortunately, Apple has officially acknowledged the problem and intends to fix it with a software update.

Identifying the Cause

Apple has assured users that the heating problem is primarily due to a software bug in iOS 17. The company explained that this bug causes some users to experience excessive heating, which will be rectified in an upcoming software update, iOS 17.1. Additionally, Apple attributed part of the problem to recent updates of third-party apps, such as Instagram, Uber, and Asphalt 9, which led to system overloads. Apple is actively working with these app developers to roll out fixes.

Hardware Not to Blame

Contrary to speculations, Apple clarified that the titanium frame and the new 3nm-based A17 Pro processor are not responsible for the heating issues in the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The company emphasized that the hardware in these Pro models does not generate excessive heat or cause thermal throttling.

Initial Warmth Explained

Apple acknowledged that newly activated iPhone 15 Pro devices might feel warm to the touch during the first few days of use. This warmth is attributed to increased background activity as the device restores data and settings after the initial setup. Apple assured users that this warmth will subside as the device stabilizes over time.

User Reports

Users of iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have reported that the back panel of their devices becomes uncomfortably warm to the touch. Some have experienced overheating warnings when using the camera for extended periods. Additionally, certain users noted that their iPhones became warm while charging. These issues have surprised many long-term Apple users who have not encountered such problems with previous iPhone generations.
