Apple CEO Tim Cook inaugurates first retail store in Mumbai; Meets Ambani, Chandra

Apple CEO Tim Cook greeted enthusiastic fans as he inaugurated the company's first retail store in Mumbai, India on Tuesday. Cook traveled to India to attend the store's launch, marking Apple's first foray into the Indian retail market. The store is located in the upscale Bandra Kurla Complex, and its design draws inspiration from the iconic black-and-yellow taxis found throughout Mumbai.

The Mumbai store is the result of years of effort by Apple and Cook to establish a retail presence in the South Asian country. Plans for an Indian store were initially announced in 2020, with a targeted opening date of 2021. However, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the company to postpone its plans. Apple will open a second retail store in New Delhi on Thursday, marking the company's first expansion into a new country since 2018.

Apple's Post China Strategy Shift

Previously, Apple relied on third-party sellers and an online store to sell its products in India. Cook described the previous arrangement as "sub-optimal" in 2020, saying, "I don't want somebody else to run the brand for us."

In India, Apple's premium iPhones have captured only 4% of the smartphone market, as consumers have turned to more affordable local, Chinese, and South Korean brands. Despite this, Apple's India sales have grown, reaching $6 billion in the year ending March, up from $4.1 billion a year earlier, according to Bloomberg.

India's Role in Apple's Supply Chain

India is increasingly playing a larger role in Apple's supply chain. Last year, 7% of iPhones were produced in India, worth around $7 billion and triple the level from the previous year. Apple supplier Foxconn is reportedly planning a new $700 million plant in Karnataka, India, which would employ 100,000 workers.

During his visit, Cook also met with Indian business leaders such as Mukesh Ambani, head of Reliance Industries, and Natarajan Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons. He is expected to meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his trip.

Apple's Impact on the Premium Smartphone Market

The launch of Apple's retail stores in India represents a significant branding strategy, as the company seeks to deepen its retail push in the world's second-largest smartphone market. While experts believe the stores may not immediately impact Apple's sales in India, they are expected to draw more consumers into the Apple ecosystem, particularly in the growing premium smartphone market.

In addition to India, Apple has made moves to diversify its production infrastructure to other emerging Asian nations. These include Vietnam and Thailand, where Apple suppliers have reportedly made investments to this effect. Additionally, Apple began hiring store managers in Malaysia in January, indicating a potential retail expansion into the Southeast Asian country.

The opening of Apple's first retail store in India coincides with the company celebrating 25 years of presence in the country. As part of its expansion plans, Apple is also focusing on new environmental initiatives and strengthening its ties with the Indian developer community.
