Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max May Be the Only Model with a 12GB RAM Upgrade
Apple's iPhone 16 launch is just around the corner, but rumors are already swirling about the next-generation iPhone 17 series. According to well-respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the 2025 flagship, iPhone 17 Pro Max, could be the only one to boast a significant upgrade in RAM, potentially reaching 12GB, instead of the entire lineup that we reported earlier.
Pro Max Goes Big on RAM?
Kuo suggests the standard iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and the rumored "Slim" model might stick with 8GB RAM, aligning with the expected specifications of the iPhone 16 series. The upcoming fourth-generation iPhone SE is also expected to have 8GB.

This aligns with Apple's strategy of making 8GB the minimum requirement for new Apple Intelligence features in iOS 18. Currently, only the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max can access these features due to their 8GB RAM, while the standard iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, limited to 6GB, miss out.
For the iPhone 17 series, Kuo predicts the Pro Max could be the only model to receive a 12GB RAM bump, potentially offering enhanced AI capabilities. This exclusivity could further differentiate the Pro Max from its siblings.
Cooling Down the Power
Kuo goes on to mention that the iPhone 17 Pro Max might adopt a unique cooling system combining a vapor chamber with graphite sheets. This advanced thermal management could be absent in other iPhone 17 models.
Pro Max Dominance Continues?
Kuo highlights the financial importance of the Pro Max variant, accounting for nearly 40% of iPhone sales. This, coupled with the potential RAM and cooling upgrades, suggests Apple might continue to equip the Pro Max with the most advanced features to maintain its strong revenue stream.
A Slimmer Option Emerges
Beyond Kuo's leaks, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman previously hinted at a potential "slim" iPhone model arriving in 2025. This could be Apple's response to the lukewarm reception of the iPhone Plus, which some users find less appealing than the Pro models.
Gurman suggests this slim iPhone could sit between the standard and Pro versions, offering a balance between performance, AI capabilities, and a sleeker design, reminiscent of the original MacBook Air.
