Apple iPhone 5G To Pack 5nm Qualcomm Chipset, X55 Modem
5G network is upon us and many network providers have begun testing their 5G services, at least in select regions. To comply with the 5G network, some premium smartphones were launched this year that were 5G-enabled. However, Apple refrained from launching a 5G compliant iPhone this year.
5G iPhone In 2020
However, the next flagship iPhone coming out in 2020 could be packed with a 5G modem. A new report surfaced from Japan shows that Apple is working with Qualcomm for 5G modems and chipsets for the next iPhone. The report states that the 2020 iPhones will feature Qualcomm X55 5G modems.
The 5G iPhones with the Qualcomm X55 5G modem will replace the older X50 modem. Apple, known for designing its chipset, could use the 5G modem from Qualcomm and integrate it in the next flagship chipset.
The 5G iPhone could pack the Apple A14 SoC, the report states. The Apple A14 chip with a 5G modem is speculated to be manufactured on the advanced 5nm manufacturing process by TSMC. The 5nm manufacturing process would put Apple in league with Huawei.
5G iPhone Surpasses Apple, Qualcomm Dispute
The new 5G iPhone would mark another tie-up between Apple and Qualcomm, after the multiple legal disputes between the companies. Apple and Qualcomm have been at war for two years over Qualcomm's patent licensing. Apple had argued that Qualcomm charges high fees for essential patents to establish its dominance to supply smartphone modems.
The tech giants went into a legal battle in January 2017, which finally concluded in April this year. In a surprise move, Apple and Qualcomm dropped all the lawsuits and came to a settlement. The companies have signed a six-year global patent licensing agreement, where it was decided that Qualcomm would continue supplying modems to Apple.
5G iPhone: Expected Features
The 5G iPhone set to launch next year is rumored to sport certain features like flexible OLED that may possibly feature a curved display on an Apple iPhone for the first time. Although, Apple featured a curved LED panel in the iPhone X. As speculated, the new Apple iPhone will feature 5G modems, adding Apple to the list of 5G compatible smartphones.
