Google Pixel 8 Pro camera review is out on DxOMark: But is it the best?

The Google Pixel 8 Pro was unveiled earlier this month as the company's latest ultra-premium offering. The Pixel 8 Pro arrived with a new chipset, an upgraded camera system, a brighter display, and enhanced audio over the Pixel 7 Pro.

The Pixel 8 Pro's display was recently lauded as the best on a smartphone to date, according to DxOMark. However, DxOMark claimed that the same couldn't be said about the Pixel 8 Pro's camera system.

DxOMark recently put the Pixel 8 Pro's camera system through its paces. The Google Pixel 8 Pro managed 153 points in DxOMark's camera test, putting it ahead of the Oppo Find X6 Pro but in fourth place behind the Huawei P60 Pro (1st with 156 points) and Apple iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max (2nd with 154 points).

Moreover, the Google Pixel 8 Pro also took the second spot in the selfie camera test with 145 points, falling behind the iPhone 15 Pro Max and its 149 points score. The Google Pixel 8 Pro's selfie camera score was on par with the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max and the Huawei Mate 50 Pro.

DxOMark's Google Pixel 8 Pro review noted that the Pixel 8 Pro was the best for photography and videography in bright outdoor lighting conditions. The review also noted that the Pixel 8 Pro had pleasant colors across all lighting conditions while capturing photos or videos.

Skin tones were accurate, while autofocus was quick and on point in photos and videos. The Pixel 8 Pro also handled exposure well, had effective stabilization, and maintained good detail in shots. Additionally, the updated ultrawide camera also managed the top score in the wide category.

However, the phone was criticized for temporal noise is visible in low light in videos. DxOMark also noted that the Pixel 8 Pro showed the occasional loss of fine detail and local loss of texture. The iPhone 15 Pro Max was also slightly better at exposure and color rendering thanks to the new HDR format.

Google Pixel 8 Pro DxOMark Scores

The Pixel 8 Pro managed an overall score of 153 points in DxOMark. Breaking things down, the phone got 155 points in the Photo section and 149 points in the Video category. The Pixel 8 Pro also managed 152 points in the zoom test.

Additionally, the cameras saw a score of 65 and 75 in the Bokeh and Preview tests, respectively. The Pixel 8 Pro's 145 points selfie camera score was broken down into 143 points for Photo and 147 points for Video.

For optics, the Pixel 8 Pro gets a triple-camera setup on the back with a 50 MP Octa-PD (phase-detect autofocus) with OIS, a new 48 MP Quad-PD ultrawide shooter, and a 48 MP Quad-PD telephoto-periscope lens with 5x optical zoom and 30x Super-Res digital zoom.

Up front, the Pixel 8 Pro gets a 10.5 MP selfie camera. The Google Pixel 8 Pro can record 4K video at up to 60fps on both the front and rear cameras. Stay tuned to Gizot for our full review of the Google Pixel 8.
