Google Unveils 'Circle to Search': A New Gesture-Based Search Feature for Android

Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked 2024 showcased the South Korean giant's AI prowess, with Galaxy AI at the forefront. Google's smarts are a key component of Galaxy AI, and one of the new features introduced was "Circle to Search." This feature streamlines the search process by allowing users to search from anywhere on their phones using intuitive gestures.

While the name suggests circling out the content in the phone, the feature goes beyond that, enabling users to interact with text or images on their screens to initiate searches.

The Circle to Search feature provides various gesture options, including circling, highlighting, scribbling, or tapping to trigger searches. The primary objective is to offer a more natural and convenient way for users to engage with Google Search without interrupting their ongoing activities, such as watching a video, browsing photos, or messaging friends.

Initiating Searches

• Circling Gesture: Users can circle an item in a video or photo to initiate a search, making it helpful for identifying objects.
• Tapping Gesture: Tapping on a specific term, such as a restaurant name in a messaging app, seamlessly generates search results.
• Scribbling Gesture: Both images and words can be engaged with using scribbling gestures for quick and efficient searches.

Multisearch and AI Integration

The search results vary based on the user's query and participation in Google Labs products. The integration of generative AI in multisearch, combining image and text queries, enhances the search experience.

Additionally, users involved in Google's Search Generative Experience (SGE) experiment via Google Labs will receive AI-powered answers, representing a step towards a more intelligent search ecosystem.

Device Compatibility and Launch Date

Circle to Search is set to launch on January 31 on the new Galaxy S24 series and the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro smartphones. Initially, it will be available on select premium Android smartphones, with plans to expand compatibility over time.
