Apple's next innovation could come in the form of its slimmest smartphone ever, the iPhone 17 Air. According to a report from The Information, the device, rumored to replace the iPhone 16 Plus, is expected to measure between 5mm and 6mm thick. If true, this would make it the thinnest iPhone yet, outpacing even some of Apple's sleekest devices like the iPad Air (6.1mm) and iPad Pro (5.1mm).

However, the Cupertino giant appears to be making several trade-offs to achieve this remarkably thin design.

The iPhone 17 Air's ultra-thin profile is expected to set a new benchmark, with a rumored thickness of just 5mm to 6mm. According to The Information, Apple is taking cues from its slim designs like the iPad Pro, which at 5.1mm, remains one of its sleekest devices. If the rumors hold, the iPhone 17 Air could become Apple's thinnest iPhone yet.

Trade-Offs of a Slimmer Design

To achieve the iPhone 17 Air's ultra-thin design, Apple is reportedly making several notable trade-offs.

One significant change is the removal of the physical SIM tray, making the device entirely reliant on eSIM technology-a move that simplifies the design but may inconvenience users who frequently swap SIM cards or rely on dual-SIM capabilities.

Additionally, space constraints have led to the inclusion of only a single speaker, which also functions as the earpiece, potentially impacting audio quality. The camera setup is also streamlined, with the iPhone 17 Air rumored to feature just one 48MP rear camera, foregoing the versatility of dual or triple-lens systems seen in recent iPhones.

The thinner profile further limits battery capacity, resulting in a smaller battery than the iPhone 16's 3,561mAh, which could lead to shorter battery life.
