MediaTek Dimensity 9400 Debuts with All-Big-Core Design, Cortex-X925 at 3.62GHz, and Next-Gen Immortalis GPU

MediaTek has officially introduced its latest flagship chipset, the Dimensity 9400, aimed at taking on Qualcomm's upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 (or the 8 Elite). With significant upgrades in AI, performance, and power efficiency, this chipset is positioned to power some of 2025's top Android devices, offering new capabilities for both smartphones and tablets.

A Performance Boost with Efficiency in Mind

The Dimensity 9400 is built on TSMC's advanced 3nm process technology, making it one of the most power-efficient chips MediaTek has released. With a 40% improvement in power efficiency compared to its predecessor, the Dimensity 9300, the 9400 is designed to handle top-tier tasks without draining your battery.

The CPU configuration features one high-performance Cortex-X925 core clocked at 3.62GHz and three Cortex-X4 cores running at 3.3GHz. This "All Big Core Design," unique to MediaTek, improves processing speeds without sacrificing efficiency. MediaTek also introduced higher clock speeds for its Cortex-A720 efficiency cores, boosting them to 2.4GHz from 2.0GHz in previous generations. These upgrades should translate to faster app loading times and better multitasking performance.

AI and the Agentic AI Engine

One of the standout features of the Dimensity 9400 is the new NPU (Neural Processing Unit), which powers the Agentic AI Engine. According to MediaTek, this is the first mobile chipset to support on-device LoRA (Low-Rank Adaptation of Large Language Models) training, enabling better AI performance without needing constant cloud connections. The engine offers 80% faster LLM (Large Language Model) prompt handling than the Dimensity 9300, making it ideal for AI-driven tasks like voice assistance, image generation, and more.

The Agentic AI Engine will also enable mobile OEMs to integrate advanced AI functions via an "Agentic Apps Store" hosted in the cloud. This cloud-based system is designed to standardize mobile AI applications, allowing companies to easily access and implement complex AI processes in their devices.

Gaming and Graphics Enhancements

For gaming enthusiasts, the Dimensity 9400 features the new Arm Immortalis-G925 GPU, which offers a 41% improvement in peak performance and a 40% reduction in power consumption during demanding gaming sessions. MediaTek has also incorporated PC-level ray tracing technology using Opacity Micromaps, providing more detailed and immersive visual experiences in mobile games.

The chip supports 8K video at 60fps, WQHD+ displays at 180Hz, and offers a 14% reduction in power usage when recording in 4K at 60fps. These features ensure that the Dimensity 9400 delivers on both visual quality and energy efficiency, making it an attractive option for flagship Android devices.

Expanding Market Presence

MediaTek is already seeing success in the global market with a 30% share, largely thanks to partnerships with companies like Xiaomi and Oppo. At the announcement event, Oppo confirmed that its upcoming Find X8 series will use the Dimensity 9400, marking its global debut. Samsung has also adopted MediaTek chips for the first time in its Galaxy Tab S10 series, further solidifying the company's foothold in the premium Android segment.

Looking Ahead

As MediaTek's Dimensity 9400 begins to roll out, all eyes are on how it will compete with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, which is expected to be announced later this month. While early benchmarks show the Dimensity 9400 leading in power efficiency and AI capabilities, real-world tests will reveal which chip ultimately performs better across a variety of devices.
