Ever since Apple announced the iPhone X with a notch at the top center, many Android OEMs have been copying this design trend and incorporating a display notch on their smartphones. Some brands such as Asus, Oppo and Vivo have already announced smartphones with the notch while some others are expected to come up with such phones. OnePlus 6 is confirmed to arrive with the display notch and there is an explanation detailing why it will feature the notch.
Last week, Pete Lau, the OnePlus CEO shared the first official image of the upcoming flagship smartphone with the display notch. It looks like the company did not receive good response from their fans for this design that he has taken to the OnePlus forums to reveal that the company will provide a way to disable the notch after the official announcement of the OnePlus 6.
The company has confirmed that it will release a software update following the launch of the smartphone, which will bring the black-out feature. This black-out feature is said to blacken the display are on either side of the notch and make it look like a thin bezel as seen in the representation image above posted by the company.
Lau goes on stating that the company had considered the inclusion of the black-out feature at an early developmental stage of the OnePlus 6. However, back then, it decided not to add the feature as it wanted to deliver maximum screen space for the users. Now, they have again resorted to adding the black-out feature due to the feedback from fans.
Notably, this is not the first time we are coming across an option to hide the notch. The Huawei P20 and P20 Pro smartphones unveiled late last month also came up with such an option, which will let users hide the display notch.
The OnePlus 6 is subjected to a plethora of rumors and speculations. The latest teaser from the company suggested that the smartphone will arrive with powerful specifications such as Snapdragon 845 SoC, 8GB RAM and 256GB storage space. The smartphone is also said to be launched in base variants with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage space and 6GB RAM and 128GB storage space. The other highlights include a fingerprint sensor at its rear and dual cameras positioned vertically.
