Google's Upcoming Pixel 9a Might Borrow the Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s Main Camera
Google's Pixel 9a, the anticipated successor in the company's mid-range lineup, is rumored to launch as early as March 2025. The Pixel 9a will reportedly feature several changes from its predecessor, the Pixel 8a (review), including an upgraded camera setup and new AI features.
While the camera resolution might sound lower on paper, the Pixel 9a is set to borrow some of the tech from Google's premium devices.

Pixel 9a to Feature a 48MP Camera
One of the biggest rumors surrounding the Pixel 9a is its new primary camera. According to a report by Android Headlines, the phone will be equipped with a 48-megapixel main camera, a step down from the 64-megapixel shooter in previous models like the Pixel 7a and 8a.
However, this isn't necessarily a downgrade. The Pixel 9a will reportedly use the same 48MP sensor found in the high-end Pixel 9 Pro Fold. This change is expected to improve photo quality despite the lower megapixel count, thanks to better sensor technology and a larger aperture.
Alongside the upgraded main camera, the Pixel 9a will likely retain the 13-megapixel ultra-wide camera and 13-megapixel front-facing camera from its predecessor. With these improvements, the Pixel 9a could deliver more refined photos, especially in challenging lighting conditions.
'Add Me' Feature
The Pixel 9a is also expected to introduce new AI-based features, including the 'Add Me' option that first debuted with the Pixel 9 series. This feature allows users to take group photos without needing a designated photographer, using AI to insert the photographer into the picture afterward. For users who often take group shots, this could be a convenient and fun tool.
New Design and Android 15 on Board
Design-wise, the Pixel 9a is rumored to be slightly taller and wider than its predecessor, with expected dimensions of 154.7 x 73.2 x 8.9mm. It will likely feature a 6.3-inch display, and recent leaks suggest the phone might adopt a flat camera module on the back, ditching the familiar camera bar from previous models.
Color options are expected to be varied, with leaks pointing to porcelain (white), iris (blueish purple), obsidian (black), and peony (pink) variants. The Pixel 9a is expected to ship with Android 15 out of the box, powered by Google's Tensor G4 chip, continuing Google's trend of using in-house processors in its devices.
Software Updates and Expected Pre-Order Timeline
Google is also expected to provide seven years of Android updates for the Pixel 9a. Pre-orders for the device are expected to begin around mid-March, allowing interested buyers to secure the device ahead of the general release.
