Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC Announced with Oryon CPU: Massive Performance, Power Efficiency Gains Revealed

Qualcomm has officially introduced the Snapdragon 8 Elite, its latest flagship chipset designed for future Android smartphones. This new chip follows a unified naming strategy similar to Qualcomm's ARM-based X Elite laptop processors.

It features an Oryon CPU with a custom eight-core design, including two prime cores at 4.32 GHz and six performance cores up to 3.53 GHz, supported by a 24MB L2 cache and 5,300MHz LPDDR5X RAM.

Big Gains in CPU & GPU Performance

The Snapdragon 8 Elite is manufactured using TSMC's advanced 3nm process. This results in a significant 45% increase in CPU performance and a 44% boost in power efficiency compared to its predecessor.

The graphics capabilities have also been enhanced with the introduction of a revamped Adreno GPU, offering a 40% improvement in both performance and energy savings, along with better ray-tracing capabilities.

AI Enhancements and Connectivity

In terms of AI capabilities, the Snapdragon 8 Elite features an upgraded Hexagon neural processing unit (NPU). This ensures AI tasks are executed 45% faster while improving performance per watt. The AI Engine now supports multimodal Gen AI, allowing large and small models to run up to 70 tokens on SLMs efficiently.

The Snapdragon X80 5G modem is another highlight of this chipset. It is the first modem to offer six times downlink carrier aggregation and AI-based mmWave range extension, promising peak download speeds of up to 10 Gbps and theoretical maximum upload speeds of 3.5 Gbps.

Advanced Imaging and Graphics

Qualcomm has integrated enhanced image signal processing (ISP) into the Snapdragon 8 Elite, working closely with the Hexagon NPU. This integration improves HDR quality, skin tone accuracy, sky colour representation, and autofocus performance. Additionally, it includes chip-level photo and video semantic segmentation as well as video object eraser functionality.

The FastConnect 7900 Mobile Connectivity System complements the modem by combining Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, and Ultra-Wideband connectivity within a single compact chip built on a 6nm process.

This new mobile SoC is also pioneering support for Unreal Engine 5.3 alongside the Nanite virtualised geometry system. These advancements aim to enhance gaming experiences on mobile devices significantly.

Upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Smartphones

The Xiaomi 15 series (Xiaomi 15 and Xiaomi 15 Pro) will be the first to use the new Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. Following the launch, the OnePlus 13, Realme GT 7 Pro, Asus ROG Phone 9, and iQOO 13 will be among the next smartphones to incorporate Qualcomm's new flagship chip. Additionally, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra as well as the Galaxy S25 and S25 Plus.

Moreover, the Honor Magic 7 series will also use the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. In the first half of 2025, you can expect the Xiaomi 15 Ultra and Vivo X200 Ultra to come with the new Snapdragon chip as well.
