Xiaomi Redmi S2 to have an AI selfie camera; specs and pricing are out

Xiaomi is gearing up to unveil the Redmi S2 in its home market China on May 10. With only a few more days left for the launch of this smartphone, the leaks and teasers appear to be increasing in number. The latest information regarding the smartphone comes in the form of a teaser posted by the company itself revealing its selfie features and an online listing of the device.

Going by a teaser posted by the company and spotted by GizmoChina, the Redmi S2 is believed to be the best smartphone in the Redmi series to capture selfies. Previous leaks have pointed out that the smartphone might arrive with a 16MP selfie camera using Samsung's S5K3P8SP sensor.

AI capabilities

And, the selfie camera is believed to have AI (Artificial Intelligence) to render enhanced selfie quality. The front camera is said to have an AI-assisted Portrait Mode to let users capture selfies with bokeh effects. The other AI features likely to be seen in this smartphone are AI face recognition and AI assisted beauty mode.

Dual rear cameras

At the rear, the Redmi S2 is believed to house a dual-camera setup with the two cameras positioned vertically at the top left corner. This camera module will arrive with a 12MP primary sensor and a 5MP secondary sensor. This one is also expected to feature AI features such as portrait mode and beauty mode.

The smartphone was listed by a Chinese e-commerce website AliExpress via GizmoChina ahead of the official announcement. This listing almost all the specifications and features of the device. Going by the same, the Redmi S2 might be fitted with a 5.99-inch IPS LCD display with a HD+ resolution of 1440 x 720 pixels. Under its hood, the device is likely to get the power from an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC paired with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage space. We can expect it to come in variants with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage space and 4GB RAM and 64GB storage space as well.

The other specifications revealed by the online retailer include a 12MP+5MP camera module at the rear, a 16MP selfie camera, and Android 8.1 Oreo topped with MIUI 9. The battery capacity is said to be 3000mAh.

The website reveals that the Redmi S2 could be launched in Gold, Grey, and Pink color variants. It is said to be priced between $159.99 (approx. Rs. 10,700) and $187.99 (approx. Rs. 12,600). But we should wait for the official announcement to happen on May 10.
