Apple Faces Backlash from EU Chief Over Decision to Hold Back AI Features in Europe
Apple recently announced that some features in its upcoming iOS 18 update, its much-touted Apple Intelligence AI suite, won't be available in Europe. The company is concerned that new regulations from the European Union (EU) might force them to compromise user privacy and security.
EU Wants More Competition
The EU's Margrethe Vestager, head of the commission, took a dim view of Apple's decision. She argued that Apple is strategically avoiding competition in Europe by withholding these features. The DMA, a recently enacted regulation, aims to level the playing field for app developers and device makers. Currently, Apple exerts significant control over its ecosystem, and the DMA seeks to loosen that grip.

Apple's Argument
Apple claims the DMA's interoperability requirements could force them to implement features that jeopardize user data security. As an example, the DMA might require Apple to allow users to mirror their Android phones on Macs, a functionality not currently supported. Apple argues that opening up such avenues could introduce security vulnerabilities.
A Public Relations Gamble?
Experts believe Apple's stance might be a calculated move to portray the DMA as anti-consumer. While the DMA restricts Apple's control, it has also benefited European users by allowing access to game streaming services and retro game emulators that were previously unavailable. Apple might be hoping to sway public opinion against the DMA by highlighting potential downsides.
What it Means for Users
For now, developers outside the EU can still test features like iPhone mirroring and screen sharing during the iOS 18 beta. Apple Intelligence is also on track for a public beta release outside Europe next month. However, European users will have to wait until Apple finds a way to address its security concerns within the framework of the DMA. This could mean significant delays or even permanent exclusions for these features in the European market.
The situation remains fluid, and negotiations between Apple and the EU are likely to continue. Whether Apple can find a way to satisfy both user security and the DMA's competition requirements will determine if European users get to experience the full range of iOS 18 features.
