ISRO’s New Committee To Study Failures Of Chandrayaan-2 Mission

|

ISRO is gearing up for the next lunar mission with the Chandrayaan-3. At the same time, the premier space agency has set up a committee to study and evaluate the mistakes that happened during the Chandrayan-2 mission. The ISRO Chandrayaan-2 committee will study reasons behind the hard landing of the Vikram lander.

The Chandrayaan-2 was launched on July 22 with a mission to soft-land on the South Pole of the Moon. The spacecraft's Vikram lander, however, had a hard landing on September 7 and has gone radio silent ever since. While the Chandrayaan-2 beams back images and information about the Moon, there is still no trace of the lander.

The Indian Space Research Organization is now setting up a committee where many institutions, organizations, senior researchers, and scientists will be included. "One committee has already been working to study the issues related to Chandrayaan-2 and the reason behind its hard landing. Some institutions and organizations were also included to study the failures of the Chandrayaan-2," said Vivek Singh, ISRO spokesperson.

The ISRO Chandrayaan-2 committee will also be giving some suggestions and reports on the upcoming Chandrayaan-3 mission, Singh added. At present, ISRO has set a November 2020 deadline for the Chandrayaan-3 mission, which makes it exactly a year ahead.

Chandrayaan-2 Beams Back Images

It's hard to admit that the Chandrayaan-2 mission was a failure. Although there has been no news about the Vikram lander, the Chandrayaan-2 satellite has continued its mission. One of the most recent updates show images of the Moon's craters. ISRO released 3D images of the craters found on the lunar landscape.

The ISRO Chandrayaan-2 mission is a major milestone in India's journey to becoming a space power. The Chandrayaan-2 mission has easily placed India among a handful of nations who have been able to develop and launch lunar missions. ISRO has planned even more ambitious missions planned like the Aditya-1, a mission to explore the Sun.
