Meta Threads Becomes Fastest-Growing Online App With 100 Mn Sign-Ups: Will It Kill Twitter?

Meta launched Threads, an Instagram-based social media platform that rivals Twitter. Within just five days of launch, Threads has amassed over 100 million members.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently indicated that Threads has frenzied activity with over 90 million posts. Now, the platform has dethroned ChatGPT to become the fastest-growing online by crossing 100 million members in the shortest possible time, boasted Zuckerberg.

Threads App Surpasses ChatGPT To Become The Fastest-Growing Social Media Platform

Meta launched the Threads app for iOS and Android devices last week. Ever since its availability, the platform has gained some serious traction.

Threads crossed 100 million sign-ups on Monday, CEO Mark Zuckerberg boasted. That's just five days of going live for the general public.

With such a pace, Threads surpassed ChatGPT to become the fastest-growing online platform to hit the milestone. There are several factors that have worked in the platform's favor.

The Threads social media platform strongly resembles Twitter. However, there are multiple other social media platforms that have cropped up in recent months, which are essentially mimicking Twitter. Interestingly, a few of these rivals have witnessed some traction too.

Threads app allows posts that are up to 500 characters long. It supports links, and photos, and even allows videos of up to 5 minutes. Currently, there are no ads on the Threads app.

Zuckerberg has indicated the company would only think about monetization once there was a clear path to 1 billion users. With such metrics, the Threads platform could cross this milestone before 2023 ends.

Threads Has Been Setting Records For User Growth But Won't Kill Twitter?

OpenAI-owned ChatGPT reportedly became the fastest-growing consumer application in history in January. The Generative AI platform reached the milestone about two months after launch. Threads managed to race past the milestone in just five days.

The Threads app does not have a Direct Messaging (DM) function and even lacks a desktop version, forcing users to use the platform's app. Meta has assured that all the relevant features, including hashtags and keyword search functions will be gradually added to the platform in the near future.

Twitter, on the other hand, is a mature social media platform. Granted it has several rivals, but has more than 200 million monetizable daily active users.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri recently indicated that Meta was not trying to replace Twitter. Meta wants Threads users to focus on light subjects like sports, music, fashion, and design.

Despite Meta's intention, Threads users would eventually bring in politics, current affairs, and opinionated debates about news and developments. Hence, practically speaking Threads is Twitter's rival.

Knowing this, Twitter is threatening to sue Meta. The micro-blogging platform has alleged that Meta used its trade secrets and other confidential information to build the app.
