Asus Nexus 7 First Gen (Android 4.3 Jelly Bean) Hands on Review

We find no issues while handling the tablet with a single hand. The Nexus 7 is negligible in terms of branding. On the rear back, you will see big Nexus logo embedded in the center, while Asus name can be found in the down center, just above speakers. There are only two physical buttons present on the entire device. You won't see three standard Android capacitive buttons under the display. On the right-hand of the tablet, the power button along with a volume rocker is visible. On the down bottom of the tablet, a 3.5mm headphone jack and mini USB 2.0 port for charging sits down the tablet.

On the left of the tablet down the edges, you will notice four dock connection pins have been given. There's a single microphone present on the top right-hand side (rear back) of the tablet. The tablet also features a VGA quality front facing camera for long chat sessions. The battery fitted inside the tablet is non-removable.

The Nexus 7 packs a 7-inch IPS WXVGA display having resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels at 216 ppi. The screen is protected from normal wear and rear - thanks to Asus True Vivid technology with Corning Fit Glass. In our tests, the display of Nexus 7 performed above average. We find some issues while reading texts in broad daylight. Viewing angles are great and watching a movie on the go is a delight. You can use Nexus 7 as an E-Book reader, especially, reading in bed at night.

Processor and Memory

Being priced affordable does not mean Asus has compromised on the quality by fusing lesser known processor/chipset. The tablet is stuffed with a 1.3GHz Nvidia powered Tegra 3 processor (quad-core) coupled with 1GB of RAM.

If you are gamer and would like to buy a handheld console, better watch out for Asus Nexus 7. Don't forget that with Tegra 3 chipset, the Nexus 7 acts as a seriously powerful gaming device. We tried to play games like Real Racing 3, Temple Run 2, Fast Racing, Racing Thunder and many more. Honestly, we never faced a single glitch while playing heavy duty games. After updating the device to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, we were not sure about its performance. Surprisingly, the tablet performs even more crisp after updating to v4.3 Jelly Bean. More or less, the Nexus 7 is suitable for gaming and for running other bunch of apps.

The Nexus 7 comes with 16GB of fixed storage. Out of 16GB of ROM, a mere 14GB is available to consume. Asus and Google could have worked out in this space. Expandable storage matters to most of the Indian tablet buyers.
