Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 2 goes official with fingerprint scanner, IP68 rating

While we reported about the Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 2 a few days ago, it was not officially announced. Now, Samsung's website contains all the specifications of the tablet as well as the information it will be launched later this month.

To start with, the Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 2 comes with an 8-inch WXGA display with the screen resolution of 800×1,280 pixels. Under the hood, the tablet is powered by an octa-core Exynos 7870 processor which is coupled with Mali-T830 GPU on top. The Galaxy Tab Active 2 offers 3GB of RAM and 16GB of inbuilt storage. The storage is further expandable up to 256GB with the use of a microSD card.

In terms of optics, the tablet is equipped with an 8MP rear-facing primary camera, while up front there is a 5MP selfie camera. On the software front, the Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 2 runs on Android Nougat OS right out of the box, which also comes with security feature Knox 2.8.

Keeping the lights on is a non-removable 4,450mAh battery. Additionally, the Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 2 features both fingerprint scanner and face recognition system. Notably, it is the first tablet to sport a fingerprint sensor.

Being the rugged version of the tablet, the Galaxy Tab Active 2 carries the IP68 certification. This means the tablet can be submerged in water up to almost 5 feet for up to 30 minutes. Even the display will be functional with wet fingers.

Samsung also says the device is designed in such a way that it can withstand "excessive pressure, temperatures, environments, vibration, and drops."

The Galaxy Tab 2 ships with an S Pen stylus, which is also IP68 certified. The tablet will be launched sometime this month in select markets. As of now, there is no information available on the pricing.
