Apple WWDC 2023: All Software Announcements Expected
The Apple WWDC is a highly anticipated event where the Cupertino giant presents its latest software and hardware advancements to developers, the press, and the world.
During this event, Apple is anticipated to announce new products and significant software updates for iPhones, Apple Watches, iPads, Macbooks, Apple TVs, and other devices. This year's WWDC is particularly thrilling because Apple is expected to reveal its inaugural Reality Pro headset.

In this article, we will focus on the software announcements that Apple is expected to make, while another article will cover the hardware aspects. Let's get started.
iOS 17
Apple's iOS 17 may include a new smart-home display mode for the locked, horizontally placed iPhone, similar to Google's Nest Hub or Amazon's Echo Show. This mode will show notifications, weather, calendar appointments, and more with bright text on a dark background, improving readability.
In addition, rumored updates for iOS 17 include a journaling app, the ability to sideload apps to comply with European Union regulations, mood-tracking in the Health app, and improvements to location services. Dynamic Island, the secondary display on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, may also receive new functionality such as Siri integration to minimize interruptions.
Apple is also expected to introduce new accessibility features, including cognitive, vision, and speech accessibility enhancements announced earlier this year. These features include Point and Speak in Magnifier, aiding individuals with vision disabilities in interacting with labeled physical objects, and Live Speech for typing messages to be spoken during phone and FaceTime calls.
iPadOS 17
iPadOS 17 is expected to have similar features to iOS 17, including smart-home display mode and app sideloading. The major update will focus on improving the Stage Manager multitasking feature.
There are rumors of webcam support for external monitors, sleep mode for the iPad display, and a resizable dock. iPadOS 17 may also lay the groundwork for future iPad Pro models with OLED displays. Lock Screen customization, including clock position adjustment, is also a possibility. This could lead to an Always-On display for upcoming OLED iPad models.
WatchOS 10
In contrast to Apple's other operating systems, watchOS is expected to receive a significant update with a focus on widgets and fundamental changes. According to Mark Gurman, the interface will combine iOS 14-style widgets with the old watchOS Glances system. This will allow users to scroll through different widgets, such as weather, activity tracking, and calendar appointments, without manually opening each app.
Apple might introduce widget stacks, allowing users to gather and scroll through multiple widgets. Additionally, they could change the functions of certain buttons on the watch, such as using the Digital Crown to open widgets instead of triggering the home screen.
MacOS 14
The official name for macOS 14 is still unknown, but Apple has reportedly trademarked several unused names, including Mammoth, which was previously rumored for macOS 13. There is a possibility that Mammoth could be used this year.
According to Tom's Guide, in an interview with Mark Gurman on the MacRumors Show, he mentioned not hearing anything significant about macOS. Similar to macOS, he doesn't anticipate major changes in tvOS too.
Apple seems to be prioritizing the enhancement of iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS, with the intention of implementing support for those features within macOS as part of its continuity strategy.
xrOS
Apple is reportedly naming its Mixed Reality headset's software platform "xrOS," as discovered through trademark filings. According to Mark Gurman, the software will feature an iPad-like home screen and support for multitasking in a spatial environment.
Users can place apps in specific physical spaces and have them reappear when reentering that space. The headset will be compatible with many existing iPad apps, including Messages, Music, Photos, FaceTime, and more. Account data can be synced through the user's iPhone or iCloud.
Gurman's newsletter mentioned additional capabilities of the headset, including a Wellness app for meditation, a VR sports-watching portal, virtual whiteboards in the Freeform app, a VR version of Fitness+ for exercise, videoconferencing with realistic avatars, and using the headset as an external monitor when connected to a Mac.
