Airtel Launches New AI-Powered Solution to Tackle Spam Calls and Messages in India
Bharti Airtel has unveiled the country's first AI-powered network-based spam detection solution. This tool, developed in-house by Airtel's data scientists, aims to protect customers from unwanted and fraudulent calls and messages. The technology, which processes an impressive one trillion records in real-time daily, flags around 100 million spam calls and 3 million SMSes every day.
This solution, available to all Airtel customers at no additional cost, is automatically activated without requiring any service requests or app downloads.

AI at the Core of Airtel's Spam-Free Network
Gopal Vittal, Managing Director and CEO of Bharti Airtel, highlighted the pressing issue of spam in India and the company's dedication to addressing it. "Spam has become a menace for customers. We've spent the last year designing a comprehensive solution, and today, we are proud to launch the country's first AI-powered spam-free network," said Vittal.

The dual-layered protection system analyzes every call and SMS. It begins with the network layer, where data is scrutinized, followed by the IT systems layer for further analysis. The AI solution processes 1.5 billion messages and 2.5 billion calls daily within just two milliseconds. By using algorithms to assess call and message patterns, frequency, and sender behavior, Airtel's system effectively identifies and blocks suspected spam.
Protecting Users from Malicious Links and Fraudulent Activity
In addition to flagging spam calls and messages, Airtel's solution alerts users to SMS links that may be harmful. The AI system scans messages in real-time, cross-referencing a centralized blacklist of URLs to ensure that suspicious links are detected. Moreover, the system can detect frequent changes in IMEI numbers, a common indicator of fraudulent behavior, further strengthening customer protection.
By layering these various protective measures, Airtel is setting a new standard in the fight against spam and fraud.
How Does Airtel's AI-Powered Spam-Free Network Work?
Airtel's spam detection system evaluates several real-time parameters, including usage patterns and call/SMS frequency. By referencing known spam profiles and behaviors, the AI system classifies messages and calls as "Suspected SPAM." This classification is then relayed to users instantly, allowing them to be vigilant against spam.
Additionally, the system alerts users to potential threats from phishing URLs embedded in SMSes. Airtel's centralized blacklist ensures that dangerous links are flagged, minimizing the chances of falling victim to fraudulent schemes.
