BSNL's New Service Lets You Send Messages and Make Phone Calls without a SIM

BSNL is now testing the D2D (direct-to-device) service, enabling users to send messages and make audio or video calls without needing a SIM card. This service is part of seven new offerings recently unveiled by BSNL. Currently, the Direct to Device service is undergoing trial testing, with plans to soon allow phone calls without a SIM card or mobile network.

BSNL's D2D technology operates by bypassing traditional mobile networks, instead connecting devices like smartphones and smartwatches through satellite technology. In collaboration with Viasat, BSNL has successfully completed trials for this service. During these tests, a commercial Android smartphone with a Non-terrestrial network (NTN) connection sent a message to a Viasat satellite approximately 36,000 km away.

The D2D technology repurposes existing cellular networks to communicate with satellite constellations, which function as large-scale cell towers in space. This innovation is particularly beneficial for individuals in low-connectivity areas and rural regions. Similar to the satellite connectivity found in Apple iPhones and flagship Android devices, BSNL's D2D technology can operate on land, air, and sea, proving invaluable during emergencies or natural disasters.

Besides BSNL, private telecom companies like Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea are also exploring satellite connectivity services.

In addition to D2D, BSNL has announced several other new services. These include a Custom Spam Blocking Solution that removes scams and spam contacts in real-time. The WiFi Roaming service allows users to connect to any BSNL FTTH Wi-Fi network while traveling. Another offering is Intranet Live TV, which enables BSNL FTTH users to access over 500 premium TV channels through a fiber-based intranet live TV service.

BSNL is also introducing Any Time SIM (ATS), providing customers with new BSNL SIM cards 24/7 through automated Any Time SIM kiosks. Additionally, the company has announced a one-time solution network for disaster management and a secure 5G network tailored for the mining sector.

BSNL's innovative approach with D2D technology marks a significant step in telecommunications. By leveraging satellite connectivity, it aims to enhance communication capabilities across various terrains and situations. As the trials progress, this service could redefine how users connect without relying on traditional mobile networks.
