Reliance Jio Leads India's Telecom Race, Vi and BSNL Grapple with Challenges

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recently unveiled its monthly performance report for the country's telecom operators, providing a comprehensive snapshot of the industry's dynamics. According to TRAI, Reliance Jio has emerged as the leader, adding the highest number of new subscribers in July, closely followed by Airtel. In contrast, Vi (formerly Vodafone Idea) and BSNL continue to grapple with subscriber losses.

Reliance Jio and Airtel on the Rise

TRAI's report highlights that Reliance Jio has continued its impressive growth by securing the highest number of new subscribers during the month of July. This achievement reinforces Jio's position as a dominant force in the Indian telecom sector. Airtel, not far behind, has also shown substantial growth in its subscriber base during the same period.

Reliance Jio Leads India's Telecom Race

According to the data, Jio is the largest wireless service provider in India, with 442.49 million subscribers. Airtel is in second place with 244.41 million users, followed by Vi with 124.27 million users and BSNL with 20.87 million users.

Vi's Struggles and the Spectrum Challenge

One of the reasons behind Vi's struggle is its ongoing battle to pay its spectrum dues, which has impacted its 5G deployment plans in the country. As a result, customers are increasingly migrating to Jio and Airtel, attracted by their robust network availability and offerings. Vi's financial challenges have been a stumbling block, causing subscribers to seek more stable alternatives.

BSNL's Efforts Towards 4G Deployment

The weakest player here is BSNL which is still actively working to deploy 4G in a nation where 5G is getting rapidly adopted.

Mobile Number Portability (MNP) Requests on the Rise

TRAI's report also sheds light on the increasing trend of Mobile Number Portability (MNP) requests. Since the introduction of MNP services in 2010, TRAI has processed a substantial 864.76 million MNP requests. In July alone, 11.77 million users utilized MNP to switch their cellular service providers, reflecting the dynamic nature of the telecom sector and users' quest for better offerings.

Overall Growth in Wireless Network Market

July 2023 witnessed an overall increase of 2.6 million wireless network users across all service providers in India. Currently, the private sector commands a 91% market share of total cellular users, with BSNL and MTNL holding the remaining 9%.

Active Users vs. Total User Base

An intriguing aspect of the TRAI report is the distinction between active users and the total user base. Of the 1,146 million wireless cellular users in India, 91.29% are active, totaling 1,046.41 million. Airtel boasts the highest ratio of active users to total users, followed by Jio. In contrast, BSNL and MTNL only have 52% and 28% active users, respectively, relative to their total user volume.

Wired Broadband Market Dynamics

In the wired broadband market, Jio maintains its dominant position with a market share of 33.13%, boasting 9.4 million active users as of July 2023. Airtel follows closely as the second-largest wired broadband provider in India, with a market share of 25.03% and 6.71 million subscribers.

BSNL and MTNL continue to have a substantial presence in the wired broadband market, accounting for 28.43% of users, or 3.68 million subscribers. Additional players in the market, such as ACT Broadband and Hathway, contribute to the remaining 20% share, showcasing the diversity within India's broadband landscape.

Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) Services: Jio and Airtel's Expansion

Both Jio and Airtel have ventured into Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services, with offerings like Jio AirFiber and Airtel Xtream AirFiber. Leveraging their 5G spectrum, these operators are extending broadband-like internet services in metropolitan areas across India. FWA services are poised for growth, driven by their easy setup process and the potential for speeds of up to 1 Gbps. This move aims to penetrate the broadband market further.
