Apple Watch Detects Elevated Heart Rate, Rescues 29-Year-Old Woman From Deadly Blood Clot

Apple devices have continuously demonstrated their remarkable capabilities in various aspects of our lives. From communication to entertainment, and now even health, Apple products have played a significant role in enhancing and safeguarding our well-being. In a recent incident, an Apple Watch came to the rescue by alerting a woman about a dangerous blood clot in her lungs, potentially saving her life.

A Life-Saving Alert

Kimmie Watkins, a 29-year-old woman from Cincinnati, Ohio, experienced an incredible turn of events thanks to her Apple Watch. While she was asleep, her watch notified her that her heart rate had been elevated for over 10 minutes. Astonishingly, her heart rate had spiked to an alarming 178 beats per minute, a level typically observed in peak-performance athletes.

Apple Watch Saves Woman's Life by Detecting Blood Clot

Recognizing the severity of the situation, Watkins immediately went to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with saddle pulmonary embolism-a severe condition caused by a blood clot obstructing both main arteries leading to the lungs. It's important to note that the survival rate for this condition is only 50 percent.

Acting swiftly, Watkins underwent surgery to remove the blood clot and is currently on a path to recovery. Grateful for the timely intervention of her Apple Watch, she urges others to utilize the health features of the device to monitor their well-being proactively.

The Expert's Insight

Dr. Richard Becker, a cardiologist at the University of Cincinnati's College of Medicine, shed light on the severity of saddle pulmonary embolism, stating that it is the most life-threatening type due to its impact on both the right and left lung blood vessels. The fact that Watkins received immediate medical attention was crucial in ensuring her survival and successful recovery.

Watkins expressed her gratitude, acknowledging the significance of the alert from her Apple Watch. She shared, "I consider myself very fortunate that my nap ended when it did, otherwise my partner would have found me asleep on the couch, not realizing what had actually occurred."

Recalling the incident, she added, "I had been asleep for approximately an hour and a half when my watch woke me up with an alarm indicating that my heart rate had been excessively high for an extended period. It had been elevated for more than 10 minutes."

Promoting Health Awareness

Currently taking blood thinners and focusing on regaining her stamina, Watkins proudly wears her Apple Watch as a constant reminder of how it played a pivotal role in her survival. Her experience serves as a testament to the potential life-saving capabilities of wearable devices like the Apple Watch.

Watkins believes that the notion of being overly connected is outweighed by the benefits such devices offer for one's health. She hopes that her story will inspire others to embrace the health monitoring features available on their Apple Watches and remain proactive in safeguarding their well-being.

Apple Watch: A Life-Saving Companion

Watkins' experience is not an isolated incident but rather one among several instances where the Apple Watch has played a crucial role in saving lives. The device's heart rate monitoring feature has proven effective in detecting atrial fibrillation, a heart condition that can lead to stroke if left untreated. Moreover, the watch offers features that can track sleep apnea, a sleep disorder associated with an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.

Recognizing the importance of mental health, Apple has also made significant strides in this area. During WWDC 2023, the company announced several new health features, including those aimed at monitoring and managing mental well-being. Among them, the Mindfulness app stands out, enabling users to log their momentary emotions and daily moods. Through engaging multidimensional shapes, users can select their current emotional state and identify influential factors while describing their feelings.
