Apple Watch Series 10 to Introduce Blood Pressure Monitoring and Sleep Apnea Detection
Apple is continuously pushing the boundaries of technology, and its upcoming Apple Watch Series 10, expected in 2024, is set to bring blood pressure monitoring and sleep apnea detection. This development, as reported by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, signifies a significant step forward in wearable health technology.
Enhanced Blood Pressure Monitoring
The Apple Watch Series 10 is slated to introduce a groundbreaking blood pressure sensor. In its initial release, this feature, designed to launch in 2024, will primarily focus on hypertension detection. It will provide users with trends in their blood pressure and prompt them to keep a journal to document events associated with elevated readings. To ensure accurate diagnoses, the feature will recommend consulting a healthcare professional or using a traditional blood pressure cuff for precise measurements.

Future iterations of this technology are under development and aim to provide more precise readings and potentially diagnose related conditions, although these advanced features are still a work in progress.
Sleep Apnea Detection
Series 10 is also slated to incorporate a sleep apnea detection feature. This function will assess sleep patterns and breathing to estimate whether a user might be experiencing sleep apnea, a sleep disorder that can have health implications. If there are signs of sleep apnea, the smartwatch will advise users to seek a medical evaluation.
Non-Invasive Blood Glucose Monitoring
Apple's commitment to health technology goes beyond blood pressure and sleep apnea monitoring. The company is actively working on non-invasive blood glucose monitoring for its future smartwatches. This technology relies on a silicon photonics chip to shine light under the skin and measure glucose concentration.
It will not provide medical-grade readings but will instead focus on displaying trends in users' blood sugar levels and issuing warnings if they are at risk of prediabetes. Apple's approach aims to promote proactive health management for individuals.
Expanding Beyond Wearables
Apple's dedication to health technology extends beyond the Apple Watch. In 2024, Apple intends to introduce hearing aid detection to its AirPods, allowing them to function as over-the-counter hearing aids and conduct hearing tests typically administered by audiologists. Furthermore, the Apple Vision Pro headset is being explored as a health device, with features such as anti-anxiety and enhanced meditation, as well as virtual reality systems to promote mental health.
