Apple's Vision Pro Faces Supply Chain Challenges: What Lies Ahead?

Apple's latest product, the Vision Pro, has generated both excitement and skepticism. While the tech giant is optimistic about its prospects, renowned market analyst Ming-Chi Kuo offers a different perspective, highlighting potential supply chain challenges and the Vision Pro's path to mainstream success.

Supply Chain Woes Threaten Vision Pro

Kuo's analysis paints a concerning picture for Apple's Vision Pro. He points to a critical hurdle: a shortage of essential hardware components. Only a select few suppliers have met Apple's standards, and they can only produce roughly half of Apple's initial Vision Pro target. As a result, it's estimated that a mere 400,000 to 600,000 units will roll off the production line in 2024, falling far short of the anticipated demand, which hovers around the one-million mark.

Apple's Vision Pro Faces Supply Chain Challenges: What Lies Ahead?

This shortage has led to a pivotal decision by Apple - the cancellation of its low-cost Vision Pro headset originally planned for a 2025 release. The move allows the company to concentrate its resources on the sole Vision Pro offering currently available, ensuring the necessary production volume.

Long Road to Mainstream Adoption

Looking ahead, Apple may continue to grapple with supply chain issues, as Kuo suggests a hardware upgrade isn't expected until 2027. Additionally, he raises concerns about Apple's ability to effectively communicate the use cases and value proposition of the Vision Pro to users, particularly when compared to the well-established iPhone.

Unlike its consumer-focused counterparts, the first-gen Vision Pro, priced at $3,499, primarily targets developers and early adopters. Although expectations for a mass-market version loomed on the horizon, the supply chain constraints may have dashed those hopes.

Production Estimates Paint a Varied Picture

Production estimates for the Vision Pro have been a subject of debate. While some sources suggest Apple is aiming for a modest 130,000 to 150,000 units in the first year, Kuo's projection of 400,000 to 600,000 units in 2024 is below market consensus. Apple CEO Tim Cook, in a recent interview with CBS Sunday Morning, expressed confidence in the headset's 2024 launch but did not divulge specific shipment numbers or confirm the existence of a low-cost version.

Cook acknowledged the complexity of the Vision Pro, citing it as a cause of both supply chain issues and the device's premium price tag. Kuo asserts that a lower-cost option would make sense for broader consumer adoption but could be futile if Apple struggles to meet initial production demands.

For now, it appears that mainstream adoption of the Vision Pro may still be several years away.
