IFA 2015: Metal Clad Samsung Gear S2 and S2 Classic smartwatch with e-SIM, Rotatable Bezel launched

|

As expected Samsung launched their Gear S smartwatches at the IFA a few minutes back. The reason for using the term smartwatch is because Gear S2 is not a ‘single' watch! Just like its Moto counterpart the Gear S2 was unveiled in two avatars - a standard edition and a classic edition.

Apparently these two smart watches were first announced at an event in South Korea on August 31.The major difference between the Gear S2 and S2 Classic lies in the design language. Not much is different in terms of internal specifications. While the Gear S2 receives a conventional sportier design with an option of black/white case along with a black/white silicon band, the S2 Classic dons a more traditional look and feel.

Going by the name you can easily assume that the watch features a leather band instead of the silicon one. The dial also looks more premium and ‘watch-like'! Both the watches are made up of stainless steel and not aluminum. Hence expect high durability!

In terms of specifications the Samsung Gear S2 features 1GHz dual-core CPU, 512MB of RAM, and 4GB of internal memory along with a 1.2 inch fully circular Super AMOLED display (360x360). The flagship feature of the smartwatch though is fully rotatable bezel surrounding the display. So feel free to just rotate the metallic bezel to navigate in and between menus. Samsung claims that this new rotatable bezel make the watch more intuitive and fun to use than the other ones available in the market. Further the watch features an IP68 waterproof, dust proof protection.

Connectivity wise the smartwatch features a Wi-Fi: 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1 and NFC. And as expected, Samsung has launched a 3G variant of the smartwatch - albeit at a higher price. The USP of this 3G variant though lies in the fact that it uses an e-SIM, thereby making it the first e-SIM device available in the market. Unlike the other variants, which comes with a 250mAh battery, the 3G variant features 300mAh version. The company claims that the normal variants will last for 2-3days of usage while the 3G will for just 2 days.
