WhatsApp Is Testing a New Feature to Share Recent Group Chats With New Members
WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new feature that allows users to share chat history with newly added group members. While the feature is not yet available to all users, it is currently being tested with a limited number of beta users. Let's see how it works:
WhatsApp Will Let Users Share Recent Group Chats With New Members
According to a report by WABetaInfo, some beta testers on both iOS and Android can share a group's recent chat history with newly added members. Often, new participants have no context about past conversations but still want to catch up. This feature ensures that new members can receive up to 100 recent messages shared in the group over the last 14 days.
To check whether this feature is available for you, add a new member to the group. Once selected, the option to share recent messages will appear at the bottom of the screen. From there, you can choose to share up to 100 messages. However, WhatsApp also allows you to select a smaller number of messages-such as 25, 50, or 75-if you prefer to limit what is shared.
Messages shared using this feature are highlighted in a different colour, and WhatsApp notifies the group when recent messages are shared with a new member, including who shared them. Moreover, the feature is disabled by default, meaning chat history is only shared if the person adding a new member chooses to do so. WhatsApp also shows confirmation alerts before sharing messages to ensure transparency and control.
As of now, there is no information about the release timeline of this feature. As noted, the feature is currently available to select beta testers, and we expect to receive official confirmation soon.
