X Updates Guidelines to Officially Allows Adult Content on the Platform
Social media giant X, formerly Twitter, recently updated its guidelines and it is stirring up quite the controversy. The updated guidelines allow for adult-related content on the platform. Since tweaking its rules, X has
Since the update X has witnessed a surge in adult or NSFW content on the platform. These changes were first noticed by TechCrunch and have replaced the earlier Sensitive Media and Violent Speech policies with new Adult Content and Violent Content policies.

New Guidelines for Adult Content on X
Under the new rules, users can share consensually produced adult nudity or sexual behavior. However, such content is restricted from obvious places like profile pictures or banners. X advises users who frequently post adult content to adjust their media settings to include content warnings.
This measure helps prevent minors or those without a birth date on their profile from viewing marked content. These updates aim to bring clarity and transparency to the platform's rules.
X's guidelines state, "We believe users should be able to create, distribute, and consume material related to sexual themes as long as it is consensually produced and distributed." The platform recognizes sexual expression as a legitimate form of artistic expression and supports the autonomy of adults to engage with and create content reflecting their beliefs and desires.
Impact on the Platform
This move aligns with the growing number of sex workers on X, especially after the relaunch of Twitter Blue. In March, TechCrunch reported plans to allow NSFW communities to apply for an "Adult Content" label to prevent overcrowding.
This change is reminiscent of Tumblr, which allowed adult content before banning it in 2018 but tweaked its guidelines in 2022 to permit nudity. The shift comes as X owner Elon Musk seeks new revenue streams to make the platform profitable.
The New York Times reported that X/Twitter might lose up to $75 million in revenue in 2023 due to advertisers leaving. The platform's embrace of NSFW content is part of Musk's strategy to counteract these losses.
These updates mark a significant change in X/Twitter's approach to content moderation. The platform aims to balance user autonomy with responsible content sharing and consumption. As these new policies take effect, it remains to be seen how they will influence the platform's community and revenue.
