Android Gets Circle to Search for Music, AI TalkBack, Earthquake Alerts, and More
Google recently unveiled five new functionalities for Android phones, tablets, and Wear OS watches, aiming to improve user interaction and cater to diverse needs.
These updates encompass accessibility improvements, music identification tools, and enhanced disaster preparedness measures.

Improved Accessibility with TalkBack and Gemini
Visually impaired users often rely on screen readers like Google's TalkBack to navigate digital content. TalkBack now offers richer descriptions of images, powered by Google's advanced AI, Gemini. This allows users to understand the content of photos on social media, online stores, and personal galleries in greater detail.
For instance, TalkBack might describe a person's attire, surroundings, or actions instead of simply saying "a person." This advancement makes digital experiences more inclusive and informative for users with visual impairments. However, the feature is currently limited to devices compatible with Gemini models.
Effortless Music Discovery with Circle to Search
Have you ever been captivated by a song playing in the background but couldn't identify it? Google's Circle to Search eliminates the need to switch apps or use separate music recognition tools. By simply long-pressing the Home button or navigation bar on your Android device, you can activate Circle to Search and instantly identify the song playing around you.
It not only reveals the song title and artist but also provides a link to a YouTube video, allowing you to explore further without interrupting your current activity.
Listen to Web Pages with Chrome Text-to-Speech
For those who prefer audio over text, Google Chrome now features a text-to-speech function. This allows you to listen to web pages being read aloud, whether catching up on news articles, following recipes, or browsing blogs. You can even personalize the experience by selecting your preferred voice, reading speed, and language.
This functionality is particularly beneficial for multitasking or those who find listening more convenient than reading. It essentially transforms any web page into an audio experience, catering to users with reading difficulties or simply those who enjoy listening.
Enhanced Earthquake Preparedness Across the US
Earthquakes can be devastating, but Google's Earthquake Alerts System aims to provide crucial seconds of warning before tremors strike. This system leverages data from millions of Android devices to detect earthquakes in real time. It's now expanding to encompass all U.S. states and six territories.
If you're in an earthquake zone, your Android device will send an alert seconds before shaking begins, allowing you time to take cover and prepare.
Following the earthquake, the alert will also provide safety tips, ensuring you stay informed and protected during and after the event.
Offline Maps on Wear OS Watches for Seamless Navigation
Exploring a new city just got easier with offline Google Maps functionality for Wear OS watches. Imagine being on vacation and wanting to navigate without relying on your phone. With this update, downloaded maps on your phone can be accessed directly on your smartwatch, even without an internet connection or your phone nearby. This allows you to navigate streets, discover tourist attractions, or find your way back to your hotel with ease.
Additionally, Wear OS Maps now offers two new shortcuts: one for voice search of destinations and another for displaying your current location with a simple tap on your watch face. This makes exploring new places more convenient and frees you from dependence on your phone.
Availability of New Features
The rollout of these features for Android users is underway, but accessibility might vary based on device type and location. For instance, TalkBack's image descriptions powered by Gemini are limited to compatible devices.
Similarly, the Earthquake Alerts System is currently restricted to the United States and its territories. However, functionalities like Circle to Search and Chrome's text-to-speech feature are expected to be available on most Android devices.
