Netflix Likely Tests Feature To Download Recommended Content Automatically

Netflix is one of the best video streaming services used by millions out there. The popularity of the service is underpinned by the great content that it offers and a slew of handy features assuring an improved viewing experience. Now, it looks like Netflix is all set to enhance the user experience further with the launch of a new feature.

Netflix 'Downloads For You' Feature

Well, the talk is about the smart download feature that has been rolled by Netflix. For the uninitiated, his feature will be useful for those who watch videos on their smartphone or tablet on the go. The smart downloads feature in Netflix will automatically download the next episode of a series that you are watching to provide uninterrupted playback.

Taking this convenience to the next level, Netflix appears to be testing a new feature called 'Downloads For You'. This feature is aimed to enhance the binge-watching experience of users. According to a report by Android Police, the new 'Downloads for You' feature is capable of downloading movies and shows that you have not watched automatically.

On enabling the 'Downloads for You' feature on the streaming service, the Netflix app will download content that it believes you will enjoy and you haven't watched yet. It is possible to set a storage limit to the downloads to prevent using up all your precious internal storage space. By default, it uses up an additional GB of space.

After downloading the movie or show, the content will be displayed in the Downloads tab in a new category below the content of the smart downloads.

Notably, the Downloads tab gets a UI refresh along with the new feature. The refreshed design show larger cards for the shows that have already been downloaded for you. Moreover, there will be a brief description, genre and category information along with the content that has been downloaded by the new feature.

Talking about notifications, when the 'Downloads for You' feature downloads any content, you will be notified in the same way as other downloads. The feature works only with Wi-Fi, so there is no way you will empty your mobile data by accidentally downloading content.

New Playback Specification Feature

Besides the new feature, the latest Netflix beta update seems to include a Playback Specification pane within the diagnostics section. You can find it under Diagnostics → More. It lets you check device-specific playback settings, so you can instantly tell if your device is compatible with HDR, supported codecs and maximum playback resolution and provides in-app brightness controls in the form of a slider.
