AMD Ryzen 7040U Series Mobile CPUs Unveiled for Laptops

AMD has announced its latest mobile processors for thin and light laptops, the AMD Ryzen 7040U series. This follows the launch of the Ryzen 7000 series of CPUs for desktops and laptops.

AMD Ryzen 7040U Series

The new AMD Ryzen 7040U lineup features RDNA3 graphics and is based on the current Zen 4 architecture. The 7040U series comprises four SKUs, the Ryzen 3 7440U, Ryzen 5 7540U, Ryzen 5 7640U, and Ryzen 7 7840U.

The high-end Ryzen 7 7840U features eight cores and sixteen threads. It includes 24MB of total cache memory. Additionally, the CPU has a base frequency of 3300MHz and a turbo frequency of 5100MHz.

Meanwhile, both Ryzen 5 CPUs feature six cores and 12 threads. They come with 16MB of L3 cache and 6MB of L2 cache memory. The Ryzen 5 7640U is faster than the 7540U, with the former featuring a base frequency of 3500MHz, while the latter has a base frequency of 3200MHz.

Finally, the lower end Ryzen 3 7440U features four cores and eight threads, with a base frequency of 3000MHz and turbo frequency of 4700MHz. The CPU has the least amount of cache, with 8MB of L3 cache and 4MB of L2 cache.

All four SKUs feature RDNA 3 integrated graphics. The high-end Ryzen 7 7840U and Ryzen 5 7640U feature AMD's Ryzen AI technology, which is a dedicated FPGA-based AI engine by Xilinx.

As for the performance, AMD boasts of up to 175% gains in Passmark 10 performance when compared to Apple's M2 chip. Additionally, it claims up to 228% Media Encode performance, comparing it to the Core i7-1360P.

AMD hasn't officially announced a release date or availability details for the AMD Ryzen Mobile 7040U series. We can expect AMD to offer details about the launch timeline at the upcoming Computex expo, which is scheduled for May 30, 2023.
