Apple's Safari Regains Spot as Second Most-Used Desktop Browser Worldwide
Google's Chrome browser remains the dominant player in the web browser market. Its widespread popularity has led users to seek it out, even if it's not pre-installed on their device. However, the question remains: what browsers follow Chrome in popularity?
Statcounter recently published a ranking based on data collected from various websites, providing insight into the current state of the market. Let's take a look at which browsers took second and third place.

The Most-Used Desktop Web Browsers Ranked Globally
According to a recent report by Statcounter, Safari has reclaimed its spot as the second most popular web browser in the world. Currently, 11.87% of desktop users regularly use Safari, while Microsoft Edge falls to third place with a market share of 11%.
Interestingly, Safari lost its position as the second most-used desktop browser to Edge last year but has now made a comeback. Meanwhile, Google Chrome continues to reign supreme as the most popular desktop browser worldwide, with an overwhelming 66.13% market share.
The latest Statcounter data also reveals that Safari's market share grew by more than 2% compared to last year, while Microsoft Edge only grew by 1%. In contrast, Google Chrome's market share remained almost the same, indicating that the browser remains largely unaffected by its competitors.
Overall, these rankings offer valuable insights into the preferences of desktop web browser users worldwide, highlighting the continued dominance of Google Chrome and the resilience of Safari in a highly competitive market.
Here's the full ranking:
- Google Chrome: 66.13%
- Safari: 11.87%
- Microsoft Edge: 11%
- Firefox: 5.65%
- Opera: 3.09%
- Internet Explorer: 0.55%
Only a Small Fraction of Indians Use Safari
Despite its global ranking as the second most-used desktop web browser, Safari has yet to gain significant traction among Indian users, with only 1.01% of Indians using the product in April, according to Statcounter's data.
While Safari continues to add new features such as web push notifications, Shared Tab Group, strong password editing, improved CSS, and Passkeys, it has yet to make significant inroads in India.
In contrast, Microsoft has been focusing on integrating AI capabilities into its Edge browser and Bing Search, including the recent integration of ChatGPT. This move has the potential to disrupt the market dominance of Google, potentially costing the search giant billions.
