Apple Rethinks OLED Display Upgrade as MacBook Sales Slump, Reports Suggest

According to reports, Apple is potentially reevaluating its decision to incorporate OLED displays in its MacBook computers. The decline in recent sales figures for the MacBook has prompted Apple to contemplate canceling its intended switch to OLED technology for the device.

Apple had originally intended to adopt Samsung's 8th-generation OLED panel for its MacBooks as early as 2024. However, there has been a shift in their plans, and now the implementation of OLED technology on MacBooks is slated for 2027.

This announcement carries significant implications for the Korean market, as forecasts have been revised downward. Apple's decision, being a major player in the industry, could have an impact on market expectations for OLED panels in Korea.

Samsung Is Also Being Affected by the Shift

It appears that Samsung's plans to purchase production equipment for their 8th-gen OLED panels have also been delayed, possibly due to Apple's decision.

Apple was expected to be a major customer for these larger and more efficient OLED sheets, but their involvement seems to have caused a pause in Samsung's equipment acquisition.

Nonetheless, it is believed that Apple is nearing the release of an iPad Pro featuring an OLED panel in 2024, which will utilize LG and Samsung's 6th-generation OLED technology.

MacBook Sales Haven't Been Great for Quite Some Time

In the last two quarters, MacBook shipments have declined by up to 50%. It is unclear whether Apple's decision to halt the OLED upgrade is connected to the slump in MacBook shipments.

Additionally, it remains uncertain how this decision will revive sagging MacBook sales. Unlike iPhones, Apple does not enjoy the same brand loyalty for its MacBook lineup.

Apple had planned to use dual-stack OLED panels with excellent properties for its infotainment systems. Dual-stack OLED screens are characterized by their enhanced brightness and extended lifespan, which makes them ideal for use in long-lasting applications such as cars or laptops that people tend to keep for an extended period.
