A refurbished phone typically refers to a model that has been returned to the manufacturer, tested for problems, and restored to full-functioning, factory-standard condition.

In terms of refurbished, the smartphone doesn't come with the original package and might not include all accessories also. But, it comes with seller guarantee, not company's guarantee. In terms of refurbished, the smartphone comes in grade, depends on the quality of the device.
Grade A- only very minor signs of wear and tears
Grade B- light damages like scratches
Grade C- will show that this is a used product
If you are looking out to buy a new smartphone, it is important to make sure that the device has been cleared of any evidence of prior ownership. If your phone was not reset to factory settings, then it might be stolen or lost by someone,

Inside all the device, there is an Electronic Serial Number (ESN), which is unique to each phone. You can check it easily by giving a call to the manufacturer. If the phone was reported stolen or if it was ever returned to the manufacturer, this will have been recorded by
the manufacturer.
This is the most important point! Always make sure, there is a dealer's return policy. If no returns are allowed, you need to be careful about the purchase. And always choose a reputable dealer.
