Pixel Phones Gain Popularity in Japan, Stealing iPhone's Market Lead
In a remarkable turn of events in the tech world, Google is experiencing a surge in its smartphone sales, notably in Japan, and this momentum is unsettling its long-standing rival, Apple.
The sales figures for Google's Pixel phones in Japan have risen exponentially, outpacing market expectations and causing a significant shakeup in the Japanese smartphone landscape.

Pixel's Japanese Triumph
The latest data from Counterpoint Research, published by Bloomberg, reveals that Google's Pixel phones have seen a sixfold increase in sales during the second quarter of 2023 compared to the previous year. This astonishing growth has propelled Google's market share in Japan to an impressive 12%. However, the more striking revelation is the decline of Apple's iPhone market share in the country, plummeting from a dominating 58% to a surprising 46%. This marks the first time in two years that Apple has seen its grip on the Japanese market slip below the 50% mark.
Budget-Friendly Success
Industry experts attribute this remarkable shift to Google's budget-friendly Pixel 6a and 7a series, which have resonated exceptionally well with Japanese consumers. Anshel Sag, Principal Mobile Analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, stated, "Japan is a huge success story for Google and the Pixel team. It appears that most of these devices are from the budget Pixel 6a and 7a series, which would likely mean that Google has successfully captured the middle of the Japanese smartphone market."
The current depreciation of Japan's currency has made imported products, including smartphones, more expensive. Google's Pixel phones, priced more competitively than Apple's iPhones, have emerged as a cost-effective alternative for Japanese consumers. The diminishing availability of carrier subsidies in the region further enhances the appeal of Google's budget-friendly offerings.
Positive Signals from the US Market
The success of Google's Pixel phones is not confined to Japan alone. Research firm Canalys recently reported that, in the United States, Google was the only major smartphone manufacturer to achieve positive shipment growth compared to the previous year. While Apple and Samsung continue to lead the market, Google's progress is a testament to its growing appeal among consumers in various regions.
The Road Ahead for Google
As Google prepares for the imminent launch of its Pixel 8 series, the company appears to be in a strong position to continue its global expansion in the smartphone market. This recent success in Japan, driven by affordable yet feature-rich devices, demonstrates Google's ability to capture market share from industry giants like Apple. With a reputation for delivering innovative technology and competitive pricing, Google's Pixel phones are becoming an increasingly attractive option for consumers worldwide.
