Exynos 990 With 20% Improved Performance To Power Samsung Galaxy S11
Samsung has unveiled its next-generation flagship chipset -- the Exynos 990. This chipset will power the upcoming flagship smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S11 and the Galaxy S11 Plus. Considering its predecessor -- the Exynos 9825, the company has opted for a different nomenclature.
Features And Specifications
The Exynos 990 uses an octa-core CPU design with two high-performance Exynos M5 cores based on custom architecture, two medium performance cores based on Cortex A76, and four efficient cores based on Cortex A55. As of now, the company has not revealed the clock speed of these CPU cores. The processor is manufactured using the 7nm EUV process making it an efficient one.
The chipset has opted for Mali G77MP11 for GPU computation, however, the exact frequency is yet to be known. This is also the first smartphone chipset with LPDDR5 RAM compatibility with up to 2750MHz frequency. Having the latest standard of RAM will help with battery efficiency and performance.
The Exynos 990 is capable of supporting a single 108MP camera sensor or dual cameras with up to 24.8MP resolution on both lenses. The neural processing unit has also received a huge upgrade as the dual NPU present on the chipset can compute up to 10 TOPs. As per the video recording, the processor can support up to 8K resolution at 30fps or 4K resolution up to 120fps using video codecs like H.265/HEVC, H.264, and VP9.
The processor features a built-in 4G modem with support for maximum download speeds of 3,000 Mbps and a maximum upload speed of 422Mbps with LTE Cat 24/22 compatibility. The Exynos 990 also supports 5G networks via an external 5G modem (Exynos Modem 5123) for both 5G NR Sub-6 and 5G NR mmWave offering a download speed of 5,100Mbps and 7,350Mbps, respectively.
Mass production of the Exynos 990 will commence by the end of 2019 and we can expect the rollout of smartphones (Galaxy S11 series) by early 2020.
