Samsung To Shut CPU Division; Is This End Of Exynos Chipsets?
Samsung custom core CPU division is going to shut down according to a new report. This could mean that Samsung would no longer release in-house developed cores like Samsung's flagship cores: the Moongoose M4 found in the Exynos 9820. The report comes from a WARN letter filed with the Texas Workforce Commission.
Samsung CPU Center To Shut Down
The Samsung custom core CPU project has developed the Exynos range of chipsets. The series has often compared to the Qualcomm Snapdragon series in performance benchmarks. However, it should be noted that Qualcomm certainly offers better performance than the Exynos cores, especially with lower power consumption to prolong the battery life.
Apparently, Samsung has licensed intellectual property from Arm Holdings notes Patrick Moorhead, an analyst. It's now believed that Samsung might use Arm cores for its upcoming chips. Samsung will no longer develop its custom cores, but, it will continue manufacturing chips under the Exynos branding.
If this is believed to be true, Samsung could feature four Cortex-A77 high-performance cores for the upcoming Exynos 9830. However, nothing can be confirmed yet. The reports are based out of the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification or WARN letter, which is a compulsory notice that employers need to submit to the state government during a major layoff.
Samsung To Shut Down Austin Campus
The Samsung custom core CPU project will come to a halt at the Samsung Austin Research Center. The result is the layoff of 290 employees among other things. The Austin campus began its operations in 1997 and Samsung has invested $17 billion on it.
According to the WARN letter, the above-mentioned layoffs will be effective from December 31, 2019. The letter also states that the laid-off employees do not have any bumping rights (contractual rights). So far, there's been no substantial information regarding how many employees will be affected in Austin and California.
A spokesperson for Samsung Austin, Michele Glaze, said that the Austin manufacturing facility employing 3,000 people will remain unaffected by the layoffs, in a statement to the American-Statesman.
