OpenAI Poached Google Engineers To Build ChatGPT Claims A Report

|

ChatGPT from OpenAI is clearly leading the race of Generative AI platforms while Google is trailing behind with its Bard AI. A new report claims the Microsoft-funded company managed to one-up Google because it poached talent from Google.

Generative AI platforms such as ChatGPT and Dall-E have been making serious waves on the internet. Although millions of internet users rely on these chatbots, many are unaware of the costs and expenses to design, develop, maintain, and improve them.

OpenAI Poached Google Engineers To Build ChatGPT, Claims A Report

OpenAI Hired Google Engineers To Build ChatGPT?

A new and potentially explosive report has claimed that OpenAI managed to develop ChatGPT because it poached key employees from Google. Besides the costs involved in the actual development and maintenance, OpenAI's expenses are exceptionally high because it paid handsomely to these poached employees, suggests the report.

One of the most notable examples is AI researcher Jacob Devlin, who worked at Google before moving to OpenAI. Incidentally, Devlin even reportedly tried to warn Google not to use ChatGPT data to train its AI chatbot Bard.

While Devlin's claims haven't been verified, there were a few reports which claimed several of Bard's answers to user queries started to look too similar to ChatGPT. If true, Google may have violated OpenAI's terms of service and usage.

Google has strongly denied these allegations. However, it is possible that the search giant may have taken a few remedial steps to ensure Bard's answers are relevant, comprehensive, and simple to understand while being noticeably distinct from ChatGPT.

OpenAI and Google Paying Heavily To Win The Generative AI Race

Be it OpenAI's ChatGPT and Dalle-E, or Google's Bard, Generative AI platforms are expensive. It is no wonder then that OpenAI's losses last year doubled to $540 million.

Apart from hiring talent at high salaries, companies must spend on the computational power and storage required to train the models that eventually spit out answers to complex questions.

Needless to say, the cloud computing bills have been staggering and continue to rise. Moreover, cloud service providers had to dedicate "thousands of GPUs" to ensure these platforms run efficiently, smoothly, and reliably.

It appears OpenAI is leading the race primarily because it poached the right talent at the right time. Combined with the considerable fund infusion from Microsoft, the American AI research company co-founded by tech giants like Elon Musk and Peter Thiel, managed to strike first.

Generative AI undoubtedly has massive potential. In fact, Microsoft is already looking at ways to recoup the losses. The company is even taking steps to make Generative AI platforms such as ChatGPT become a revenue source in the future. Meanwhile, Google's Bard appears to be stumbling.
