Starting February 1, 2025, UPI users in India will no longer be able to use special characters in their transaction IDs, as per a directive from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

Example of Transaction ID Changes:

  • Valid ID: abcd123
  • Invalid ID: abc@123#456!

The valid ID contains only letters and numbers, while the invalid ID includes special characters (@, !, #), which will no longer be permitted.

Why Is NPCI Enforcing This Change?

  • Security Enhancements - Cyber frauds and online scams often exploit UPI IDs with special characters to create deceptive links or phishing attacks. Restricting IDs to alphanumeric characters reduces this risk.
  • Standardization Across Platforms - The change ensures that all banks and payment platforms follow a uniform transaction format, preventing technical glitches and inconsistencies.
  • Regulatory Compliance - While most banks and UPI service providers have already adapted to this rule, some non-compliant entities continue to use special characters. The new regulation forces them to align with NPCI's updated framework.

To ensure uninterrupted UPI payments, users should take the following steps before February 1, 2025:

1. Check and Update Your UPI App

Ensure your UPI app is running on the latest version, as most updates include compliance fixes to meet NPCI's new security standards.

2. Verify Your UPI ID Format

  • Go to your UPI app and check your UPI ID under account settings.
  • If your ID contains special characters, update it to a fully alphanumeric format before the deadline.

3. Contact Customer Support if Needed

If you're unsure whether your UPI ID complies with the new rule, reach out to your bank or payment service provider for clarification.

4. Use Trusted UPI Apps

Avoid third-party or unverified payment apps, as they may not yet comply with NPCI's new guidelines. Stick to official UPI platforms from banks and trusted financial institutions.
