Apple's New Patent Hints at iPhone VR Headset Development

In an exciting development, Apple has recently received a patent from the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) that could potentially pave the way for iPhones to function as virtual reality (VR) headsets.

This patent application was filed in late 2021, about a year and a half before Apple's groundbreaking announcement of their first mixed reality headset, the Apple Reality Pro.

The Apple Patent and Future Accessories

According to Patently Apple, a publication specializing in patents, Apple has been granted a new patent for future accessories. This patent covers a wide range of items including a folio case with an additional display, a folio case designed for plastic cards, an Apple AirPower-like charging pad, and more.

The Apple VR Headset for iPhones

However, one particular accessory that stands out is an Apple VR headset for iPhones, resembling the JioDive-an affordable VR headset priced at Rs 1,299. This move clearly indicates that Apple has set its sights on the AR/VR market with a diverse product lineup, including the high-end $3,499 Vision Pro mixed reality headset, the rumored budget-friendly Apple Vision, and now the iPhone VR headset. Let's dive into the details of this new Apple VR headset designed specifically for iPhones.

The patent design showcases a VR headset that bears a striking resemblance to the Reliance JioDive. The VR headset showcases a design reminiscent of ski goggles, incorporating a headband that securely fastens around the back of the head, offering a comfortable and snug fit.

The JioDive Comparison

While the concept of an iPhone VR headset is still in the patent stage, it's worth noting that Indian users already have the opportunity to experience immersive viewing through the JioDive headset. The JioDive headset, priced at Rs 1,299, is readily available for purchase on JioMart, Reliance Digital, and the official website.

The JioDive headset supports both Android and iOS devices with a screen size of 4.7 inches and above. It requires the JioImmerse app to provide users with a truly immersive VR experience and offers focus adjustment using physical dials located on the top of the headset.

The Wireless Charging Station and AirPower Resemblance

In addition to the iPhone VR headset, the patent document also reveals an intriguing diagram of a wireless charging station that bears a striking resemblance to Apple's canceled AirPower charging station.

The diagram showcases two smartphones and a pair of wireless headphones being charged wirelessly. Notably, one of the handsets is displayed in a case that can communicate wirelessly with the charging station. The case also features a secondary screen, which conveniently shows the charging status of both phones and the earphones.

It's important to remember that, as with all patented technology, there is no guarantee that these features will be implemented in future Apple devices. However, this recent patent approval clearly demonstrates Apple's commitment to innovation and exploring new avenues in the AR/VR space.

The potential for iPhones to double as VR headsets opens up exciting possibilities for users who want to immerse themselves in virtual worlds without the need for additional devices.
